Certain foods may help fight infection, boost energy and provide optimal benefits for heart health. When combined with a nutritious diet and adequate exercise, they may add years to our lifespan. Some of these foods contain antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for preventing and repairing cell damage and for keeping good cholesterol levels high and bad cholesterol levels low for optimal cardiac or heart health. Other foods can protect us from illness, disease and may help prevent certain types of cancer while others are good brain power and muscle building.
Blueberries
Blueberries contain vitamins A and C, antioxidants and fibers, all of which are beneficial. Blueberries are said to be helpful in preserving memory function and preventing cancer, as well as strengthening and enhancing the cardiovascular system, leading to stronger, healthier hearts and excellent circulation.
Spinach
Spinach is one of the best sources for omega-3 fatty acids and folate, which help grow and develop muscle tissue and enhance heart health by reducing plaque deposits on the inside of arteries.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are a rich source of an antioxidant called lycopene, which is believed to help reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, including stomach, prostate and skin cancers. Tomatoes can also help reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and promote cardiovascular health.
Carrots
Carrots can help improve and maintain eyesight, as they contain beta carotene. Carrots are also believed to help protect the body from cancer, diabetes and some forms of arthritis.
Black Beans
Black beans contain anthocyanins, another type of antioxidant that reduces cell destruction. Black beans are known for increasing brain power.
Walnuts
Walnuts also contain important antioxidant properties that help reduce cell destruction. Walnuts are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce cholesterol levels and help build strong, healthy muscles.
Whole Grains
Whole grain foods like oat cereals and pastas are a rich source of fiber, which helps keep the digestive tract working properly, as well as reducing the risk of clogged arteries. Whole grains are essential for muscle building, and lean muscle mass burns more calories than fat, leading to a healthier body.
Oranges
Oranges are one of the best fruits to eat. In addition to containing vitamin C--essential for good eyesight and immune system function--oranges also contain beta-carotene, as well as flavonoids that are known to help reduce the risk of cancer.
Yogurt
Yogurt is filled with good bacteria that help keep the immune and digestive system operating at peak efficiency. Yogurt is a primary source of probiotics, known to help boost immunity and protect the body from everything from colds to cancer.
Chili Peppers
Chili peppers are known to contain capsaisin, a chemical that not only improves circulation but also helps prevent and reduce inflammation inside the body. Chili peppers have been used for generations to remove toxins and mucus from the body and to prevent ulcers and prostate cancer.
